Hey,
I think hiring or using startnext ist a good Idea.
Eventually later another one has time to maintain the code. (if its maintainable ;) )

Greetings,

Hello all,

I agree that something needs to be done and if a commercial developer can help us make the step towards J4 then it might be possible to maintain by the community the code afterwards. Fact is (like Hekla says) that if we do nothing all will be lost.

Wolfgang's suggestion that JEMSA could step in is a good one..; It's actually the purpose of JEMSA:
Articlel 3 – Objectives and means
1. The objective of the Association is
a. facilitating the ‘community’ of developers and users of the Joomla Event Manager (JEM) webapplication;
b. to stimulate and assure the continuous developent of JEM;
c. to promote the use of free and open source software in general, and JEM in particular;
d. to acquire, establish, divest, act as owner/beneficiary of domain names and word- and image marks, and
e. to carry out anything related to the foregoing in the broadest sense of the term
2. The Association aims to achieve this goal by acquiring funds through accepting donations and acquiring
other forms of revenues from commercial exposure on websites hosted on domains provided by the
Association.
3. The Association is not allowed to share profit under its member

I have a few random questions that come up:
@Hekla: Why would you make it your personal project and then donate the code? Should we organise it through you or through JEMSA?
Who is going to choose the developer? Or, (hopefully) do you have someone in mind that can do the job?
What is the end-goal to be achieved? I guess we would need someone to assess if the goals are met before we make the final payment?

I noticed that the startnext platform takes some costs (4% fixed for transactions + 3% suggested for commissions) but that is probably worthwile as they also promote the campaign I presume.

Sorry, forgot to answer the question...:
Yes, as admins we can send out a mailing to all forum users via Acymailing. Off course we could ask for help directly in such a mailing as well.

Oh yes, of course. I wasn't really aware of the association.
In what way would JEMSA be active?

@Hekla: Why would you make it your personal project and then donate the code? Should we organize it through you or through JEMSA?

For me everything that works is fine
I had the impression, that there was quite low energy for a J4 version of JEM. I just didn't want to push people when they do not have capacities or the motivation. I think it is a waste of energy.
I just want JEM to live on.
At the moment I thought it is easier to do it this way, instead of getting acquainted with the whole organizational structure. But if anyone personally or a representant of JEMSA it with me – welcome!

Who is going to choose the developer? Or, (hopefully) do you have someone in mind that can do the job?

Good question. I have an affordable coder from Turkey, who has already programmed some Joomla stuff for me, and who is into Joomla programming, MVC etc.
But I am open for suggestions – at the end it is also a matter of money.

What is the end-goal to be achieved? I guess we would need someone to assess if the goals are met before we make the final payment?

Yes, of course it has to be checked. I have a developer friend (into Joomla but too expensive), who will review the code for free.
Are there coders here, who could do this as well? That would be really great – are you @Ernst67 one of them?

I noticed that the startnext platform takes some costs (4% fixed for transactions + 3% suggested for commissions) but that is probably worthwile as they also promote the campaign I presume.

Yes, it is worthwhile and that's more or less the same everywhere.

Well, a little bit of history about JEM and JEMSA...:

It started as "Eventlist" by Christopher Lukes, aka 'Schlu'. It had loads of users, but all of a sudden the main developer and owner of Schlu.net disappeared from the scene, and eventually the website www.schlu.net died.

After that the forum was hosted by Julien Vonthron for 2 years, I can't even remember under what domain name. So when the idea of a new fork (JEM) came along we thought it was better to have multiple people controlling the domain name, so it would not be dependant on just one person. That is where the idea of an association (JEMSA) came from.
JEMSA had 2 board members (myself and StevenT), who unforunatly left 2 months ago. I'm on my own now, which is not the desired situation. So, there are 2 seats available in the JEMSA board!
All is just to ensure that the domain name (joomlaeventmanager.net) will be kept online.

JEMSA is funding the domain name costs by taking donations. The hosting is paid by myself since the beginning. But, off course we can use donations also to maintain the code, if we can't find volunteers that have the capacity to do it.

What we could do:
- send out a mailing to all forum users to ask for a donation because we are going to hire a commercial developer to rewrite the code to Joomla4.
- use the campaign on Startnet as an extra source of money (maybe use the Paypal donations account of JEMSA as it already exists)

If your experience with your Turkish developer is good, than I'm totally fine with that. Unfortunately I have the same profile as all the other users here..: I have good intentions with JEM, but I'm not a developer myself

I think it's best to create a clear goal on Github for the developer to accomplish. Using Github will also allow us to track the task list, test the results and approve the development as it progresses.

I really appreciate your initiative, so let's see if we can make the best of it!

Hi ernst67,
Thanks for the insights. Interesting.

I would appreciate to discuss with you (an eg. with jojo) the precise goal and requirements für JEM for J4, so I then can give good instructions to the developer.

Up til now I have the basics:
  • ready for J4
  • ready for php 7.4 and 8.x
  • write maintainable code (with comments!) according to Joomla Coding Standard (like: github.com/joomla/coding-standards/)
  • look and feel acoording to J4 design and styles (bootstrap 5 etc).
I also started the fundraising campaign www.startnext.com/jem-for-joomla4

The next days I prepare a mailing to the board users, wich I will send to you to check and send out.
