My Venues

My Venues gives each signed-in user a frontend list of the JEM venues created by that user, including their current publication state and the actions permitted for each record.

Ownership-based view: My Venues selects records whose Created by user is the current account. It is not a public directory of all venues and does not add venues merely because the user can edit or publish them through another permission path.

Create the Menu Item

  1. Open Menus in the Joomla administrator and create a new menu item.
  2. Select JEM → My Venues as the menu-item type.
  3. Place it below the site's User Area or contributor menu.
  4. Set Joomla Access to Registered or to the custom access level intended for venue contributors.
  5. Configure the optional page text and the standard Joomla page-display settings.
  6. Save and test with venue owners who have different create, edit and publication permissions.

Which Venues Are Listed?

  • Only venues whose creator matches the current Joomla user are selected.
  • Published, unpublished, archived and trashed owned venues can all remain visible in this management list.
  • The list is ordered by venue name by default and supports pagination.
  • Search and page-size controls appear according to the global JEM filter and display settings.
  • Publication actions are evaluated separately for every venue; owning a record does not automatically grant permission to change its state.
Created by controls membership in this list. If an administrator creates a venue for another contributor, set that contributor in the venue's Created by field. Changing Joomla groups or granting edit permission alone does not transfer ownership or make the venue appear in that user's My Venues list.

List Content and Columns

Column or controlVisibilityBehaviour
Venue Always shown The venue name is sortable. It links to Venue Detail when global venue links are enabled.
City Shown when the global Show city setting is enabled Displays the venue city and enables City as a search target.
Country Currently controlled by the global Show state setting Displays the country name; the table layout can also show its flag. This coupling is a current implementation detail.
Status Always shown Identifies Published, Unpublished, Archived or Trashed. It becomes an action link only when the user may change that venue's state.
Selection checkbox Shown when at least one displayed venue can be published by the user Only eligible rows receive a checkbox, allowing permitted state changes without exposing other rows.

The table and responsive list both include structured Place and PostalAddress metadata for the venue name and stored address fields, even though not every address value is presented as a visible column.

Searching, Sorting and Pagination

  • Venue search is always available when global filtering is enabled because the venue-name column is forced on in My Venues.
  • City search is offered when Show city is enabled globally.
  • State search is offered when Show state is enabled, even though the corresponding visible column currently presents Country.
  • Click Venue, City or Country headings to change the order where the selected layout makes the heading sortable.
  • The global events-per-page/display-number setting provides the initial page size, and the user can change it when the global display selector is enabled.
  • Changing the search or page size resets or normalises the pagination start so results do not remain on an invalid page.

Menu Options

My Venues intentionally has a small view-specific configuration. Its visible columns, links, filter and pagination largely inherit the global JEM settings.

OptionInternal nameDefaultEffect
Show Introtext showintrotext No Enables the Introtext field in the menu configuration. See the current implementation note below.
Introtext introtext Empty Safe HTML intended for display above the venue list.
Show footer text showfootertext No Enables custom text below the list and pagination.
Footer Text footertext Empty Safe HTML displayed below the venue list when enabled.
Current implementation note: the My Venues menu XML exposes Show Introtext and Introtext, but the current standard and responsive page templates do not render that introductory text. Footer Text is rendered normally. Use the Joomla page heading, a module above the component or a template override when introductory guidance is required.

Create, Edit and Publish Permissions

The toolbar and row controls are assembled from the effective JEM permissions of the current user. Joomla menu access only decides who may open the menu item; it does not grant these operations.

CapabilityFrontend resultPermission behaviour
Create venue The button bar can offer venue submission. The current user must be allowed to add a JEM venue.
Edit venue Editing is normally reached through the Venue Detail/edit controls or a frontend submission route. JEM evaluates edit or edit-own permission and record ownership.
Publish or unpublish The status icon becomes clickable and eligible rows receive selection checkboxes. Publish permission is checked per venue against its ID and creator.
Restore an archived venue to Published An archived, eligible status can be changed back to Published. The same per-record publish permission is required.
Change a trashed venue The trashed state is displayed but its status icon is not an inline state-change link. Recovery or deletion should be handled through an authorised administrative workflow.

State changes also respect checkout: JEM does not update a venue checked out by another user. When several rows are submitted, only venue IDs for which the current user passes the publish check are accepted.

Venue Timezone and Event Times

Set the venue timezone correctly. When an event uses Venue timezone as its time reference, the timezone stored in the selected venue determines how that event's civil start and end times are interpreted and displayed. A wrong venue timezone can therefore make every linked event appear at the wrong time.
  • The timezone belongs to the venue record; My Venues does not currently show it as a list column.
  • Open or edit the venue to verify its timezone, especially for contributors managing venues in several regions.
  • Changing a venue timezone can affect the interpretation/display of events that use Venue timezone, so retest linked events after the change.
  • Events using Joomla timezone or a custom event timezone do not take their time reference from the venue.
  • Venue timezone is unrelated to Joomla publication start/end windows, which represent publication instants rather than event civil times.

Online and Physical Venues

My Venues can contain both physical and online venue records supported by the site's JEM configuration. Physical venues should have accurate address, coordinates, map choice and timezone data. Online venues should use the appropriate online-event/venue fields and avoid misleading map or street information.

The compact My Venues list does not expose every venue field. Open Venue Detail or the edit form to review descriptions, images, links, attachments, custom fields, coordinates, map settings and timezone.

Login and Record Visibility

  • My Venues requires an authenticated Joomla user.
  • A guest who opens the route directly is redirected to Joomla login with a return URL.
  • Setting the menu item to Registered also keeps the link out of the public menu.
  • Because this is an owner-management view, it intentionally includes the user's unpublished and other non-public venue states.
  • A venue appearing in My Venues does not mean that anonymous visitors can see it on public JEM pages.

Print and PDF

The JEM button bar can provide print and PDF versions of My Venues when those outputs are enabled. Interactive controls such as selection checkboxes and state-changing links are removed or disabled in print-oriented output. Verify both outputs if the site exposes these buttons, especially when a template override changes the list layout.

Practical Examples

Place My Venues and Submit Venue under a Registered User Area. Allow contributors to create and edit their own venues, while reserving publication changes for a trusted group. Contributors can review their saved unpublished records without gaining publishing authority.

Enable city and country display globally and require a correct timezone on every physical venue. The organiser can search by venue/city while linked events display their local civil times when Venue timezone is selected.

Let contributors submit venues as Unpublished. A publisher checks the address, coordinates, map, timezone and description, then publishes the record through the permitted frontend or backend workflow.

Troubleshooting

SymptomCheck
The visitor is redirected to login This is expected for guests. Confirm that login returns the user to the original My Venues URL.
An expected venue is missing Check the venue's Created by user. Edit permission alone does not place another creator's venue in this list. Also clear the active search.
The list includes unpublished or trashed venues This is expected in the owner's management view; the status column identifies each state.
The status cannot be changed Check publish permission for that specific venue, its creator and whether it is checked out by another user. Trashed rows do not provide the inline toggle.
Country appears when Show state is enabled This is the current My Venues column mapping. State remains available as a search target, while the visible column presents Country.
The configured intro text is absent This is a current template limitation. Use the page heading or a module above the component; footer text works normally.
Events at the venue show the wrong time If those events use Venue timezone, correct the timezone stored in the venue and retest the events.

Before Publishing

  • Set the menu item to Registered or the intended contributor access level.
  • Test with venue owners who can edit only, publish, and create venues.
  • Verify published, unpublished, archived and trashed rows.
  • Check venue, city, country and status in both table and responsive layouts.
  • Test search, sorting, page-size selection and pagination.
  • Verify per-row and multi-row publication actions and checkout protection.
  • Confirm venue timezones before events use them as their time reference.
  • Check print and PDF output when enabled.
