User Area

The User Area brings together the JEM frontend views that let signed-in users manage their own events and venues, review their registrations, administer attendee registrations and build a personal event timeline.

This is a documentation section, not a single JEM menu-item type. Build a user area by creating the individual Joomla menu items described below and placing them under a common parent menu item.

User Area Views

Content management

My Events

Lists events available to the current user for frontend management. Depending on JEM permissions, the user can open, edit, publish or unpublish individual events and inspect attendee information.

Content management

My Venues

Lists venues available to the current user. Editing and publication controls are shown only when the user has the corresponding permission for that venue.

Registrations

My Attendances

Shows the events for which the current user has a registration, together with places, registration status and comment columns when enabled.

My Attendances Timeline

Presents the same registration-based selection as a chronological timeline, with configurable card placement and optional dates on the timeline axis.

Registration management

Attendee Registrations

Provides trusted managers with a global, searchable registration list, including status changes, notification tools, waiting-list promotion and Print/PDF output.

My Timeline

Builds a personal chronological view from event purposes such as Personal calendar, Activity history, Planning and Event diary. Registered events can also be included.

Event discovery

Search

Provides a detailed event search using event type, category, venue, continent, country and date filters. Unlike the protected personal and management views, Search can be made available to guests.

Create the User Area in Joomla

  1. Open Menus in the Joomla administrator and create a parent menu item named, for example, My JEM or User Area.
  2. Create a child menu item for each required view using the appropriate JEM menu-item type: My Events, My Venues, My Attendances, My Attendances Timeline, My Timeline, Attendee Registrations or Search.
  3. Set the Joomla Access of personal menu items to Registered or to a more restrictive access level used by the site. Give Attendee Registrations a dedicated access level containing only trusted registration managers.
  4. Configure the columns, date range, timeline presentation, introductory text and footer text offered by each menu item.
  5. Publish the menu in a position visible to the intended users and test it with accounts belonging to every relevant Joomla user group.
Menu access and JEM permissions have different jobs. Joomla menu access decides who can open or see a menu link. JEM permissions decide which records and actions the signed-in user may access. A visible My Events link does not automatically grant permission to edit events, and a visible Attendee Registrations link does not grant access to registration data.

Login and Access Behaviour

  • My Events, My Venues, My Attendances, My Attendances Timeline, My Timeline and Attendee Registrations require an authenticated user.
  • If a guest opens one of these protected JEM routes directly, JEM redirects the visitor to the Joomla login page and supplies a return URL so the requested page can be reopened after login.
  • Setting the menu item to Registered keeps personal links out of the public menu and provides the clearest navigation.
  • Records still have to pass their publication, category and view-access checks. A user will not see protected content merely because it belongs to a personal view.
  • Editing and state-change controls are evaluated per record. Two events in My Events can therefore present different actions to the same user.
  • Attendee Registrations has an additional component-level permission check. The user needs either JEM core.admin, or all of core.manage, jem.events.access and jem.attendees.manage.
  • Attendee Registrations is a global management view and can expose names, usernames, email addresses and comments across events. Restrict it to trusted staff.
  • Search is not a personal account view. It may remain Public unless the site intentionally restricts event discovery.

Frontend Management Permissions

Configure frontend capabilities under the JEM user-control and Joomla permission settings. Test the effective result rather than relying only on the menu access level.

CapabilityWhat the user seesWhat to verify
Create events or venues A submission button or the separately published Submit Event / Submit Venue menu item The user group is allowed to create that content type and required categories are accessible.
Edit own or permitted records Edit controls on eligible rows and detail pages Ownership and the effective edit or edit-own permission for each record.
Change publication state Publish or unpublish controls only on eligible rows The user has state-change permission for that individual event or venue.
View registrations Attendee information for events the user may manage Event-registration settings, attendee-column configuration and management permissions.
Manage registrations globally The Attendee Registrations table, status controls, batch actions, notification tools and waiting-list promotion The account has JEM core.admin, or all three required management permissions. The menu item also uses a restricted Joomla access level.

Dates and Time Zones

The personal lists and timelines use the same event date and time-reference rules as the rest of JEM. An event can use the Joomla timezone, the venue timezone or a custom event timezone. The selected reference determines the civil time shown for that event; it does not change which Joomla user owns the record or registration.

When a venue is the time reference, make sure its timezone is configured correctly. This is especially important in My Attendances, Attendee Registrations and timeline views that may combine events from several locations.

Recommended Menu Structures

Create a Registered parent named My JEM with My Events, My Venues and My Attendances below it. Add separate Submit Event and Submit Venue links only for groups that are allowed to contribute content. If organisers manage registrations, publish Attendee Registrations under a more restrictive staff-only access level.

Publish My Attendances as the main account page and add My Attendances Timeline as an alternative chronological presentation. Keep content-management links hidden when attendees do not create events.

Use My Timeline with the Personal calendar and Planning purposes, then enable registered events if bookings must appear in the same sequence. Keep My Attendances available for detailed registration status and places.

Create a staff-only Attendee Registrations menu item with Name, Username, Email, Places, Event, Event Date and Status. Grant its access level and the required JEM permissions only to registration managers. They can then filter registrations, apply status changes, resend notifications and promote users from a waiting list.

Troubleshooting

SymptomCheck
A personal page sends the visitor to login This is expected for guests. Log in with a valid account; JEM should return the user to the original page.
The page is empty after login Confirm that the account owns or may manage records, has registrations or has events matching the configured My Timeline purposes. Also check publication and access levels.
Edit or publication controls are missing Check effective JEM permissions for the user group and the individual record. Menu access alone does not grant an action.
Attendee Registrations redirects an authenticated user to the home page Grant JEM core.admin, or all of core.manage, jem.events.access and jem.attendees.manage. Joomla menu access alone is insufficient.
A waiting-list registration cannot be changed directly to Attending Use the dedicated Promote from Waiting List action so JEM validates event capacity, notification and queue policy.
Old registrations are missing Review the menu item's past-days and filtering options for My Attendances or its timeline layout.
My Timeline omits expected events Check the selected purposes, past-days limit and whether Include registered events is enabled.
An event time differs from the expected local time Check the event time reference and, when Venue timezone is selected, the timezone stored in the venue.

Before Publishing

  • Create only the personal views required by the site's workflow.
  • Set personal menu items and their parent to Registered or the intended custom access level.
  • Test guest redirection and the return to the requested page after login.
  • Test with a contributor, an event organiser, an attendee and a user without JEM permissions.
  • If Attendee Registrations is published, use a staff-only access level and test its three required management permissions.
  • Choose only the attendee columns managers need and review the handling of personal data in Print/PDF exports.
  • Confirm that edit and publication controls appear only for permitted records.
  • Check empty states, filters, pagination, responsive layout and event times.
