Configure the global presentation of venue information, including address and contact details, description, custom fields, website, related events and the map service used by compatible JEM venue output.
Current version coverage
The main settings documented on this page apply to JEM 5.0.1, JEM 5.0.2 Beta 1 and JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4. Features available only in JEM 5.1.0 are documented separately in the final appendix.
Venue Page contains global controls. The Joomla Venue Detail menu item provides additional view-specific options. Where both controls apply, both must permit the content to be displayed. Stored data, publication state, Joomla access levels and JEM permissions remain authoritative.
Navigation and Access
In the Joomla administrator, select Components → JEM → Settings → Venue Page.
Opening or saving JEM Settings requires the applicable Joomla/JEM core.options permission. Saving validates the complete Settings form, not only the currently visible tab.
Venue Page at a Glance
Venue Details
Control the visibility of the address, contact details, description and external website.
Custom Fields
Choose where populated, frontend-visible venue custom fields appear.
Related Events
Permit accessible events assigned to the venue to be listed on its detail page.
Map Services
Configure Google Maps or OpenStreetMap as the global venue map provider and presentation.
Configuration Flow
1 Store venue data Enter the address, coordinates, timezone, contacts, website and description in the venue record.
2 Set global visibility Choose which venue information JEM is allowed to display globally.
3 Configure the menu item Select the venue and configure its heading, image, description, events, map, introductory text and footer.
4 Verify access and output Test the page as Guest and as every relevant registered-user role.
All Venue Page Fields
The defaults below describe a normal new JEM installation. Some form-level fallback values may differ if a stored configuration key is missing.
| Field | New-install default | Options and practical effect |
Display Venue Address
global_show_detailsadress |
Yes |
Yes permits populated venue details to be displayed. On Venue Detail this includes street, postal code, city, district, level, capacity, state, country, timezone, email, phone and mobile. No hides this details block. Selected venue-list output also reads this global setting. |
Display Venue Description
global_show_locdescription |
Yes |
Globally permits a non-empty venue description to be displayed. Venue Detail also requires Show venue description in the matching menu item. Compatible venue-list and venue-map popup output may also use this setting. |
Venue custom fields position
global_venue_custom_fields_position |
Details block |
Places populated, frontend-visible venue custom fields in the Details block, Before description, After description or After links. The selected position is also used for venue custom fields displayed inside Event Detail. |
Show Weblink to Venue
global_show_detlinkvenue |
Yes |
Displays the external website stored in the venue record. No link is rendered when this option is disabled or the venue URL is empty. Selected venue-list output also reads this setting. |
Show list of events
global_show_listevents |
Yes |
Globally permits the venue event list. Venue Detail also requires Show venue events in its menu item. Publication dates, event state, categories, access levels and visitor permissions continue to filter the list. |
Choose Map Service for Venue Detail Page
global_show_mapserv |
No Map Service |
Selects one of six global map modes. It also determines whether the map flag is enabled automatically when a new venue is created. The Venue Detail menu item can use this global choice or override only its presentation. |
Top level domain of Google Maps homepage
global_tld |
Empty |
Used by Google modes 1, 2 and 3. Enter a suffix such as com or de, without a leading dot. When Google Maps is enabled, explicitly setting this value is recommended. |
Google Map language
global_lg |
Empty |
Used by Google modes 1, 2 and 3. Enter a Google Maps language code such as en, de, es or nl. This does not change the Joomla interface language. |
Field coverage: the Venue Page tab currently contains these eight controls in JEM 5.0.1, JEM 5.0.2 Beta 1 and JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4.
Global Settings and Venue Detail Menu Options
A Joomla Venue Detail menu item adds options for one selected venue. The following matrix shows how those options combine with the global settings.
| Frontend content | Global control | Venue Detail menu control | Effective rule |
| Address and contact details |
Display Venue Address |
No equivalent |
The global option must be Yes and each individual venue value must exist. |
| Description |
Display Venue Description |
Show venue description |
Both options must be Yes and the venue description must contain usable content. |
| Related events |
Show list of events |
Show venue events |
Both options must be Yes. Event publication, date, category, access and permission filters are applied afterwards. |
| External venue website |
Show Weblink to Venue |
No equivalent |
The global option must be Yes and the venue must contain a valid URL. |
| Venue image |
No equivalent on Venue Page |
Show venue image |
The menu option must be Yes and a usable venue image must be assigned. |
| Venue publication status |
No equivalent on Venue Page |
Show venue status |
The menu option must be Yes and the current visitor must have the required publishing permission. |
| Event status indicators |
Basic Settings master switch |
Show status indicators |
The feature must be enabled globally and for the menu item. Indicator availability still depends on the events displayed by the venue. |
| Map |
Global map service |
Venue map display |
Use Global follows the six-mode global setting. Other menu values override the presentation while retaining the provider family selected globally. |
| Introductory and footer content |
No equivalent on Venue Page |
Show Introtext / Show Footer |
The relevant switch must be enabled and its editor must contain content. |
Menu-specific overrides are applied when the request is using the matching active Venue Detail menu item. If a direct venue link is resolved through a different Joomla menu item, JEM may use the global map behaviour instead.
Menu-only Venue Detail Options
Heading and venue content
- Show event status indicators
- Venue heading: label, label and name, or name only
- Show venue publication status
- Show venue image
- Show venue description
- Show venue events
Map and page content
- Use Global, Hide, Text link, Button link or Embedded map
- Show Introtext and Introtext editor
- Show Footer and Footer editor
- Standard Joomla page heading, metadata and page-class options
Custom Field Placement
| Value | Placement | Recommended use |
| Details block |
Inside the structured venue facts. |
Short values such as accessibility, parking, room code, public transport or facilities. |
| Before description |
Immediately before the venue description section. |
Important operational information visitors should read before the editorial description. |
| After description |
Immediately after the venue description. |
Secondary information that complements the main venue text. |
| After links |
After the description and map area and before attachments. |
Directions, technical references or supporting venue resources. |
Only enabled fields configured for frontend detail output and containing a usable value are rendered. Labels, field types, ordering and visibility are configured under Custom Fields Settings.
In JEM 5.0.1 and JEM 5.0.2, this setting controls JEM's built-in venue custom fields. JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 extends the same presentation block with Joomla custom fields and Joomla field groups; see the version appendix below.
Global Map Service Options
| Value | Mode | Requirements and notes |
| 0 |
No Map Service |
No global map output. Newly created venues have their map flag disabled by default. |
| 1 |
Display link to Google Maps |
Displays a Google Maps link. Configure the Google TLD and language fields. |
| 2 |
Display Google Maps |
Renders a Google Maps iframe. Verify browser privacy controls, provider terms and template behaviour on the target website. |
| 3 |
Display Google Maps using API credentials |
Legacy Google Maps JavaScript/API mode. It requires a configured API key or client ID and must be tested on the target domain before production use. |
| 4 |
Display link to OpenStreetMap |
Displays an OpenStreetMap link. No Google credentials are required. |
| 5 |
Display OpenStreetMap |
Embeds an OpenStreetMap map. Accurate stored coordinates provide the most reliable and efficient result. |
The venue map flag must also be enabled. Selecting a global service or a menu presentation does not display a map when the individual venue has its map option disabled.
For modes that support address fallback, JEM requires a complete street, postal code, city and country when valid coordinates are unavailable. Coordinates are strongly recommended because they avoid ambiguous address resolution and unnecessary geocoding requests.
Venue Detail Map Presentation
| Menu value | Result | Provider selection |
| Use Global |
Global modes 1 and 4 become a text link; modes 2, 3 and 5 become an embedded map; mode 0 hides the map. |
Uses the exact global map service. |
| Hide |
No map link, button or embedded map is displayed. |
No provider is used. |
| Text link |
Displays a textual map action in the venue details. |
Uses Google when the global service belongs to Google modes 1–3; otherwise uses OpenStreetMap. |
| Button link |
Displays the same external map action as a button. |
Uses Google when the global service belongs to Google modes 1–3; otherwise uses OpenStreetMap. |
| Embedded map |
Renders the map directly inside the Venue Detail page. |
Uses Google when a Google global mode is selected; otherwise uses embedded OpenStreetMap. |
Venue Timezone
The venue timezone is configured in the individual venue, not on this Settings tab. It becomes the event's time reference only when the event selects Venue timezone. Events using Joomla timezone do not inherit it.
Assign the correct IANA timezone to venues located in different regions, for example Europe/Madrid or America/New_York. This preserves the local civil time and daylight-saving rules of events that inherit the venue timezone.
The venue timezone does not control Joomla publication start or end dates.
Practical Examples
- Enable address, description, website and event list globally.
- Store the complete address, contact details, coordinates, timezone, description and website.
- Select Display OpenStreetMap globally and enable the venue map flag.
- In the Venue Detail menu item, enable image, description and events and select Use Global.
- Add concise custom-field values such as accessibility, parking and public transport.
- Test the page as Guest on desktop and mobile.
- Disable Display Venue Address globally only when the same privacy rule should apply to every venue output.
- Otherwise, leave private address and contact values empty in the individual venue.
- Disable the venue map flag and select Hide in its Venue Detail menu item.
- Keep only a safe public description and website or online-meeting information.
- Review attachments and custom fields for accidental location or contact disclosure.
- Test direct venue, event, print and PDF routes as Guest.
- Enable the address, description and website required by the venue profile.
- Keep Show list of events enabled globally if other venue pages still need event lists.
- Disable Show venue events only in this Venue Detail menu item.
- Use the venue description, custom fields and attachments for access plans or technical documentation.
- Confirm that direct event pages remain available according to their normal access rules.
- Assign the correct IANA timezone to each individual venue.
- Select Venue timezone for events that must inherit their venue's local time.
- Store accurate coordinates for every physical location.
- Test an event in each region and events around daylight-saving transitions.
- Keep event dates, event timezone and Joomla publication dates conceptually separate.
JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 Appendix
Beta feature notice: the following capabilities belong to JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 and are not available in JEM 5.0.1 or JEM 5.0.2 Beta 1. Their configuration and presentation may continue to receive adjustments before the final JEM 5.1.0 release.
Extended Custom Fields
Venue output can combine built-in JEM fields, ungrouped Joomla fields and Joomla field groups.
Age Classification
A venue can contribute an age range to its events and display an accessible classification badge.
Venue and Event Hierarchies
Advanced profile venues can have parent/subvenue relationships, while the menu can filter parent events and programme items.
JEM and Joomla Venue Custom Fields
JEM 5.1.0 can display three venue-field sources in the same detail block:
- JEM fields: the ten built-in venue custom fields configured in JEM Settings.
- Joomla fields: published, ungrouped fields created for the
com_jem.venue context.
- Joomla field groups: populated grouped fields displayed in compact cards identified by their group title.
The Venue custom fields position setting continues to control where the complete block appears. The order inside that block is selected under Settings → Custom Fields → Venue custom fields order.
| Order | Displayed sequence |
| Default |
JEM fields → Joomla fields → Joomla field groups |
| Alternative 2 |
JEM fields → Joomla field groups → Joomla fields |
| Alternative 3 |
Joomla fields → JEM fields → Joomla field groups |
| Alternative 4 |
Joomla fields → Joomla field groups → JEM fields |
| Alternative 5 |
Joomla field groups → JEM fields → Joomla fields |
| Alternative 6 |
Joomla field groups → Joomla fields → JEM fields |
Only fields containing data are displayed. A Joomla field group is omitted completely when none of its fields contains a displayable value.
Venue Age Classification
- The classification is assigned while creating or editing the individual venue.
- When defined, the Venue Detail heading displays the configured badge.
- If the venue has no classification, no badge or age line is displayed.
- When an event and its venue both define age ranges, JEM applies their intersection: the higher minimum age and the lower maximum age.
- Registered-user checks use the date of birth stored by Joomla's User Profile plugin.
- Events outside the registered user's effective range are filtered, while unrestricted events remain visible.
Age levels, ranges, badge labels and colours are configured under Settings → Age access, not on Venue Page.
Venue Hierarchy and Related Event Scope
With the JEM Advanced operating profile, a venue can be assigned to a parent venue. Venue Detail can then display a link to its parent and a list of direct subvenues.
The Venue Detail menu item also adds an Event hierarchy option for its related event list:
| Value | Related events displayed |
| Calendar default |
Uses JEM's normal calendar-oriented hierarchy behaviour. |
| Parent events only |
Displays top-level programme events and excludes their child items. |
| Programme items only |
Displays child events belonging to a programme. |
| Parent events and programme items |
Displays both levels in the venue event list. |
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
| The address or contact details are missing |
Enable Display Venue Address and confirm that each individual value is populated. The same global switch controls address, timezone, email and telephone details. |
| The venue description is missing |
Enable both the global description option and the menu item's Show venue description option. Confirm that the venue contains usable description text. |
| The website link is absent |
Enable Show Weblink to Venue and store a valid external URL in the venue. |
| The map does not appear |
Check the global map service, the menu's Venue map display value, the individual venue map flag and the available coordinates or complete address. |
| The wrong map provider is used |
Text, button and embedded menu overrides retain the provider family selected globally. Select a Google global mode for Google output or an OpenStreetMap mode for OpenStreetMap output. |
| The menu map override appears to be ignored |
Confirm that the current request is using the matching active Venue Detail menu item and not a different Joomla Itemid. |
| No events are listed |
Enable both global Show list of events and menu Show venue events. Then check venue assignment, dates, publication state, event hierarchy, categories and access levels. |
| Custom fields are missing |
Check the stored values, field enablement, frontend detail visibility and selected placement. In JEM 5.1.0 also check the Joomla field context, publication state, access level and field group. |
| A Joomla field group is missing in JEM 5.1.0 |
Confirm that the group belongs to com_jem.venue and that at least one published field in the group contains a displayable value. |
| An age badge is missing in JEM 5.1.0 |
Confirm that a published age classification is assigned to the venue. An unclassified venue intentionally displays no age badge. |
| An event shows the wrong local time |
Check the venue timezone and the event's time-reference setting. Do not use display or map settings to correct event time data. |
| A setting affects more than Venue Detail |
Address, description, website, map configuration and custom-field placement are global values and may also be consumed by selected event, venue-list or venue-map output. |
| Changes are not visible |
Check the active Joomla menu item, selected JEM layout, template overrides and caches, then test the canonical venue URL again. |
Saving and Verification
- Select Save and resolve validation or permission warnings from any Settings tab.
- Open the published Venue Detail menu item and review its view-specific options.
- Test venues with complete, partial and empty data to verify conditional output.
- Test Guest, registered user, venue owner, JEM maintainer and administrator roles as applicable.
- Test the selected map presentation on desktop and mobile.
- Check Event Detail, Venues List and Venues Map when changing a global option consumed by those views.
- If venue timezones are used, test events in another region and around a daylight-saving transition.
- For JEM 5.1.0, also test populated and empty Joomla field groups, age-restricted users and parent/subvenue navigation.
Technical Notes
- The Venue Page fieldset currently renders eight global controls.
- A clean installation enables address, description, venue website and related events, while the global map service remains disabled.
- Description and related-event output use an AND rule between their global and Venue Detail menu controls.
- The Venue Detail map selector contains five values: Use Global, Hide, Text link, Button link and Embedded map.
- The individual venue map flag remains authoritative regardless of the global or menu presentation.
- The custom-field position is shared by Venue Detail and the venue custom-field block displayed inside Event Detail.
- Venue values are emitted conditionally; enabling a display option does not create missing data.
- Joomla publication state, access levels, JEM permissions and event/category filters remain independent of presentation settings.
- JEM 5.1.0 adds Joomla venue fields, grouped field presentation, age classification, venue hierarchy and related-event hierarchy filtering without adding new controls to the Venue Page fieldset itself.
