Venues

The Venues section explains how JEM stores reusable event locations and how visitors browse them as a list, map, individual venue page or frontend submission workflow.

Choose by visitor task: use Venues List for a searchable directory, Venues Map for geographic discovery, Venue Detail for one location and its events, and Submit Venue only for authorised frontend editors.

How Venue Data Is Reused

  1. An administrator or authorised frontend user creates one reusable JEM venue record.
  2. The venue stores its name, address, coordinates, country, image, description, website, type and other configured data.
  3. One or more events can reference that venue without copying its address into every event record.
  4. Venue lists and maps lead visitors to the Venue Detail page.
  5. The Venue Detail page and Venue Calendar can show the events assigned to that location.
Coordinate requirement: a venue may still be valid without coordinates, but it cannot be positioned reliably on Venues Map, Events Map or embedded map output until valid latitude and longitude values are stored.

Venue Data and Its Frontend Effect

Venue dataUsed forRecommendation
Name Venue links, lists, map popups, event detail and calendars. Use a clear and recognisable public name.
Address, city, state or county, postcode and country Visitor directions, location filters, address output and geocoding. Keep the structure consistent across all venue records.
Latitude and longitude Exact marker position on venue and event maps. Verify coordinates after automatic geocoding or manual entry.
Venue timezone The time reference inherited by events whose Event time reference is set to Venue timezone. Select the venue's geographic IANA timezone, especially when the site manages venues in different timezones. An empty value falls back to the Joomla timezone.
Map visibility Whether map output is allowed for the venue. Disable it only when the location should not be exposed.
Venue type Classification, badges, list filters and type-based views. Use types consistently when the site has many different location kinds.
Image and description Venue directory cards, detail presentation and visitor context. Use an accessible image and concise practical information.
Website, attachments and custom fields Additional information, visitor resources and site-specific venue data. Publish only links and files that remain maintained and accessible.
Publication and access Whether the venue and its links are available to the current visitor. Test public and restricted records with representative accounts.

Map Configuration

Map output combines JEM venue data with the map provider selected in the component or menu-item configuration.

Venue requirements

  • A published and accessible venue.
  • Valid decimal latitude and longitude values.
  • A recognisable venue name.
  • Accurate address and country information.
  • Map display enabled where applicable.

View configuration

  • Map provider and required API configuration.
  • Fallback centre and zoom.
  • Automatic centring on available markers.
  • Marker images and popup actions.
  • Country, city or other supported filters.

Venue Timezone and Event Time Reference

The timezone stored on a venue becomes authoritative only when an event selects Venue timezone as its Event time reference. In that mode, JEM interprets the event's local start and end values using the selected venue's IANA timezone and calculates the corresponding UTC boundaries.

SituationJEM behaviour
Event uses Venue timezone and the venue has an IANA timezone The event inherits that timezone, including the daylight-saving rules applicable on the event date.
Event uses Venue timezone but the venue timezone is empty JEM falls back to the timezone configured in Joomla.
Event uses Joomla timezone The venue timezone is ignored for that event.
Event uses Custom event timezone The event's explicitly selected timezone is authoritative, even if it differs from the venue timezone.
The timezone of a venue is changed JEM recalculates the stored UTC start and end boundaries of events that inherit that venue's timezone.
Important: the venue timezone affects event date/time interpretation, chronological ordering, timezone display and timezone-aware integrations. It does not control the event's Joomla publication window; start-publishing and finish-publishing values are separate visibility settings.

Practical Examples

Use Venues List with venue title, image, city, country and map action. Enable a country filter for international catalogues and a venue-calendar link when visitors commonly browse programmes by location.

Use Venues Map, centre it on the network's service area and enable only useful country or city filters. Verify every marker and popup link after importing or geocoding venue records.

Create a Venue Detail menu item for an important theatre, museum or campus. Show its address, image, description, website and map, followed by the upcoming events assigned to that venue.

Publish Submit Venue for a registered contributor group but keep publication permission restricted to trusted editors. Review proposed names and addresses to prevent duplicate venues before approving them.

Before Publishing

  • Check for duplicate venues created with slightly different names or address formats.
  • Confirm publication state, access level, ownership and edit permissions.
  • Verify address, country, latitude and longitude data against the real location.
  • Set the correct IANA timezone and test an event configured to use Venue timezone, especially across daylight-saving changes.
  • Test the selected map provider, fallback centre, zoom, markers and popup links.
  • Review venue images, descriptions, websites, attachments, types and custom fields.
  • Test venues with no upcoming events and venues with restricted events.
  • Check Venues List, Venues Map, Venue Detail and Venue Calendar on mobile layouts.
  • Test frontend creation and editing with every authorised user group.
  • Review Joomla template overrides after updating JEM if newer venue fields or controls are missing.
