JEM Settings
Settings is the central configuration area for JEM. It defines component-wide defaults for events, venues, layouts, frontend submissions, registration, recurrence, images, custom fields, age access, PDF output, notifications and system behaviour.
Navigation: Joomla Administrator → Components → JEM → Settings
10 tabs in JEM 5.0.x
Up to 13 tabs in JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4
Current documentation scope
- JEM 5.0.1 is the current stable release.
- JEM 5.0.2 Beta 1 retains the ten-tab Settings structure from JEM 5.0.1.
- JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 adds Images, Age access and Notifications, together with additional options inside several existing tabs.
- The Notifications tab is only displayed when the JEM Advanced operating profile is active.
Settings can affect the entire site. Record non-default values and test the affected frontend views, forms, exports, documents, scheduled tasks and user roles after changing global configuration.

Settings access and saving require the JEM/Joomla core.options permission. Users without that permission receive an authorization error.
How JEM Resolves Configuration
1
Profile and Settings
The operating profile exposes the supported feature set, while Settings provide component-wide defaults and limits.
2
Menu or Module
A menu item or module may override supported display settings for its own output.
3
Record Data
Event, venue, category and type values provide item-specific content and overrides.
4
Access and ACL
Joomla ACL, category permissions and venue permissions determine who may view or perform each action.
5
Output Layers
Layouts, template overrides, module styles and CSS determine the final presentation.
A display option is not an authorization rule. Hiding a button, field or record does not replace Joomla ACL. Test restricted functions with a non-Super-User account and with direct URLs.
Recommended First Configuration
In JEM 5.1, select Essential or Advanced in Global Parameters. Then configure Global Parameters and Basic Settings, including date formats, timezone behaviour, old-event handling, recurrence limits, attachments, CSV and metadata.
In JEM 5.1, configure Images before contributors upload production content. Define accepted formats, maximum file size, minimum and maximum dimensions, image adjustment rules, aspect ratios and storage subfolders.
Configure User Control, then verify Joomla ACL and the permissions assigned to JEM categories and venues. Decide who may submit, edit, publish or delete events and venues, and who may manage registrations.
Configure Event Page and Venue Page. Then limit Countries, define Custom Fields and, in JEM 5.1, create the required Age access classifications.
Configure Layout and test lists, detail pages, modules and print output on desktop and mobile. In JEM 5.1, also review the module status ribbons available in Basic Settings.
Enable PDF only for the required views. When using the JEM 5.1 Advanced profile, configure Notifications and confirm that the Joomla Scheduled Tasks plugin and JEM notification task are active. Finally, inspect Config Info.
High-Impact Settings Checklist
| Area | Risk to review | Acceptance test |
| Operating profile |
Changing profile alters which completed JEM capabilities and configuration areas are available. |
Verify the Control Panel, event editor, registration workflow and Settings tabs after changing profile. |
| Event lifecycle |
Archiving or deleting old and recurring events can change links, series and historical data. |
Create a representative recurring series and test the configured cleanup or archive boundary. |
| Timezone and iCal |
Joomla, venue and custom event time references can produce different UTC values. |
Export timed and all-day events across a daylight-saving boundary. |
| User Control and ACL |
Over-permissive create, edit, publish or delete rules can expose editorial actions. |
Test Guest, Registered, edit-own, editor and administrator accounts. |
| Registration |
Attendee identity, comments and capacity information may contain personal data. |
Check event pages, attendee lists, CSV, PDF, notifications and direct export URLs. |
| Images and attachments |
File types, dimensions, file sizes and storage paths affect security, storage and page performance. |
Test valid, oversized, undersized, disallowed and misleadingly named files. |
| Age access |
An incorrect event or venue classification can hide content or prevent valid registrations. |
Test unrestricted content, restricted content, missing dates of birth and ages at range boundaries. |
| Notifications |
Incorrect scheduling, templates or retry limits can delay or duplicate messages. |
Test immediate delivery, reminders, retry, resend, retention and Scheduler health with a test account. |
| Import security |
Trusted iframe hosts and imported HTML affect content security. |
Keep core protections enabled and test only explicitly trusted HTTPS embeds. |
| Custom CSS |
A missing replacement stylesheet can remove expected presentation. |
Verify desktop, mobile, print and every responsive or legacy layout used by the site. |
| PDF |
Documents can expose data that is hidden in normal HTML views. |
Open every enabled PDF as Guest and as a restricted user. |
| Uninstall cleanup |
Enabling database cleanup can remove all JEM data during uninstall. |
Keep a verified backup and document the chosen uninstall policy. |

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
| Settings cannot be opened or saved |
Confirm that the user has the JEM/Joomla core.options permission. |
| A change appears to have no effect |
Check menu-item and module overrides, operating profile, selected layout, cached output, template overrides and whether the option applies to that view. |
| A saved field returns to its previous value |
Look for a validation message, invalid path, unavailable dependency or value outside the accepted range. Enable Inline Help and save again. |
| The Notifications tab is missing |
Notifications are available in JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 only when the Advanced operating profile is selected in Global Parameters. |
| Reminder automation is inactive |
Check that reminders are enabled, the JEM Scheduled Tasks plugin is enabled and the JEM notification task exists and is published in Joomla Scheduled Tasks. |
| An age-restricted registration is rejected |
Check the event and venue age classifications, the user's date of birth and the calculated age on the event date. Venue and event restrictions are both enforced. |
| An image cannot be published |
Review the matching image profile, required-image rule, dimensions, aspect ratio, adjustment mode, allowed extension and file-size limit. |
| A frontend button is hidden but its URL still works |
Display settings are not ACL. Correct Joomla/JEM permissions and verify the direct URL with the restricted account. |
| A custom stylesheet is not loaded |
Confirm that the file exists in CSS Manager, the matching replacement is enabled in Layout and the responsive or legacy scope matches the active layout. |
| A PDF button or option is missing |
Check the PDF view selection, menu or view configuration, required permissions, installed PDF library and Config Info. |
| Country or custom-field choices are missing |
Review Countries or Custom Fields, save Settings, then check visibility, category field selection, Joomla field context and active language. |
Technical Notes
- JEM 5.0.1 and JEM 5.0.2 Beta 1 render ten Settings tabs: Basic Settings, Event Page, Venue Page, Layout, Global Parameters, User Control, Custom Fields, Countries, PDF Settings and Config Info.
- JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 adds Global Parameters as the initial tab and adds Images and Age access to every operating profile.
- JEM 5.1.0 Beta 4 adds Notifications only when the Advanced operating profile enables notification automation.
- The JEM 5.1 Settings screen opens Global Parameters by default. A supported URL fragment can request another available tab.
- Saving validates the complete Settings form, not only the tab currently visible.
- Editable settings are stored as JEM component configuration and global attributes. Countries and age classifications also use their dedicated persisted data.
- Config Info combines read-only package, extension, server, library and diagnostic information.
- Some features depend on enabled JEM plugins, Joomla permissions, PHP extensions, external API keys, Joomla Scheduled Tasks or third-party libraries.
- Menu items and modules can override only the options explicitly provided in their configuration. They do not duplicate every global setting.
