The Calendars section explains the JEM frontend views that organise events by day, week, month, year, category or venue.
Choose by time scale and purpose: use a day view for a focused programme, a weekly or monthly grid for navigation, the Annual Calendar for a complete 12-month overview, and a category or venue calendar when the page must remain limited to one part of the event catalogue.

How Calendar Navigation Works
- The Joomla menu item selects the calendar view and its initial date, category or venue scope.
- JEM retrieves events that intersect the displayed day, week or month and that the current visitor is authorised to see.
- Previous, next and current-date controls move through the calendar while preserving the applicable view context.
- Day numbers can open the Day Calendar, and event titles open the corresponding Event Detail page.
- Print, iCal or other export actions are displayed only when supported and enabled for that view.
Multi-day events: a calendar can show an event on every day that it spans or only on its starting day, depending on the view configuration. Confirm this option before publishing long events or exhibitions.
Shared Calendar Configuration
Not every option is available in every layout, but the calendar family shares these main configuration areas.
| Configuration area | What it affects |
| Date and range |
The initial day, number of days or weeks, month and navigation context displayed to visitors. |
| Event scope |
Archived or featured events, top category, selected category, selected venue and other view-specific filters. |
| Grid density |
First weekday, visible hour range, maximum events per day and whether empty days or unused hours appear. |
| Colours and legend |
Default event colours, category colours, current-day highlighting, featured borders and legend placement. |
| Event information |
Title, time, category, venue, type, image, intro text and other details supported by the selected layout. |
| Frontend actions |
Add, edit and copy controls, print output, calendar export and links to day or event pages. |
| Page text |
Optional introduction and footer content configured in the Joomla menu item. |
Practical Examples
Create a Monthly Calendar, use Monday or Sunday as the first weekday according to the audience, enable category colours and place the legend below the grid. Set a practical maximum number of events per day so busy dates remain readable.
Use Day Timetable, organise blocks by venue and time, and restrict the visible hour range to the conference programme. Check overlapping sessions, events without times and narrow mobile screens before publication.
Use Day Timeline with several consecutive days, hide empty days and show category, venue and event images when they help visitors identify each session. Use event filters when the programme covers several areas or event types.
Create a Venue Calendar and select the required venue. Only events assigned to that venue are included, while the familiar monthly grid and event-detail navigation remain available.
Before Publishing
- Confirm that events and their assigned categories are published and visible to the intended access levels.
- Check event start and end dates, start and end times and the selected event timezone.
- Test single-day, multi-day, recurring, open-date and untimed events where applicable.
- Verify the first weekday, week numbering, month navigation and current-day highlight.
- Review event density on busy dates and configure the maximum number of visible events where available.
- Check category colours, legends, featured borders and text contrast in both desktop and responsive layouts.
- Test print and export actions with the same date and filter context shown on screen.
- Test add, edit or copy icons with each authorised user group if frontend management is enabled.
- Review Joomla template overrides after updating JEM, especially when a newer calendar layout adds options or controls.
