Basic Questions and observations

This is my first experience with JEM. I installed JEM on a local server and am trying to understand how it works. So far I am impressed what I am seeing.  Someone has obviously put a LOT of work into this component. There are some things that t don't understand.  Also in reading the comments I like the idea of turning some fields off.  Perhaps I can already do this as I am just now trying to get acquainted with  how things work. 

My intention is to display a mixture events both from venues like performance center, theaters and places that hold recurring events as well as personal events like Garage or tag sales (Not sure what they are called in other countries)  but sales events where people sell personal items, clothing, furniture, toys, etc. from their homes.  I do not need nor want to save a venue record for these as they are usually one-off.  The same person at the same address my only ever do this once or perhaps once every few years.  In this instance I would have a template with the venue field turned off and use custom fields for the address..  Hopefully I could assign a specific template to a particular category.  Is that possible?

BTW the categories for this forum do not include "questions", which would be useful.

Hi, i do see that you did edit the message abd it seems you did find an swer.

Now i'm wondering: what was your solution/answer.  might be helpfull for others.

And yes i do agree that the forum could use some additional topics / categories. Maybe Ernst67 or someone else can take a look at that

 

JEM already supports events without a venue, the venue selector can be left empty, and the event will be displayed without creating a venue record.

However, the current JEM custom fields are configured globally and the same field configuration is used for every event. To improve this, we have opened the following proposal:

The proposed design would allow each category to choose one of these options:

- Use all globally enabled JEM custom fields.
- Use only selected fields from the existing `custom1` to `custom10` fields.
- Use Joomla Custom Fields defined specifically for JEM events.
- Use no custom fields.

For example, a “Garage Sales” category could use only Address, Postcode, Price and Collection Instructions, while theatre or performance categories could continue using the normal venue workflow.

Could you please check the proposal and let us know whether this design fits your use case? In particular, would leaving the optional venue field empty be sufficient, or should the category configuration also hide the venue selector completely from the event submission form?

I wasn't sure what was the appropriate topic to choose when I made my post. as for forum topics,  I'd Like to see something as simple as "How do I" or "Questions" as a topic. Anyway, thanks for responding so quickly.
As to me edited question: I do not remember what it was that I deleted. Whatever it was, I found the answer in the online documentation. I will try to do better next time.

So I am editing this  post again: I will check the proposal and respond.  Although I have been doing IT work for MANY years (My first language was COBOL reading and writing ISAM files) I am very new to JEM and working my way through Joomla for a couple of volunteer projects.
