Sorry, I can't reproduce your issue. In my 5.3.3 and JEM 4.3.4 it's working fine with upcoming events.
You must have wrong settings!
To reproduce, you should give more and enough informations

Please, apply this commit in \components\com_jem\models\eventslist.php file of JEM 4.3.4:

I modified the eventlist.php file as indicated and now it is correct. I correctly display the list of upcoming events.
